China Now Music Festival 2024
Composing the Future
The China Now Music Festival is an annual series of events produced by the Bard College US-China Music Institute, in partnership with the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. A major platform for contemporary Chinese classical music in the US, the festival acts as a bridge between cultures amidst the ever-changing landscape of global politics.
We wanted this years identity to have an aura of mystery. This is because the Festival is introducing pieces that will be composed in collaboration with AI. Here is a new world, one where the map is yet to be drawn and the boundaries are unclear. The traditional Chinese characters that spell the word FUTURE are seen through mysterious shifting clouds. Sometimes we make out regular and repetitive distortions, hinting at patterns that we cannot yet understand. This is an identity for a work in progress, where some of the most ancient musical forms harmonise with completely new sounds that are being created as we watch.
